NDSU vs.
On a beautiful
Saturday evening, the NDSU Bison strapped on their boots for the first time in
2008 to face off against one of their biggest rivals, the University of North
Dakota Fighting Sioux. NDSU made the
first mark on the scoreboard when Freshman winger Brian Chapman put the ball in
the back of the net after a scramble in front of UND’s goal. Both teams continued to attack, creating
close calls on each end. About midway
through the first half, a questionable penalty kick was called against
NDSU. A UND attacker blasted it past
off-balance Bison keeper Tom Erickson.
However, it wasn’t long before the Bison struck back. In the final minute of the half, NDSU’s Zach
Peters broke loose behind the UND defense and calmly passed the ball around the
UND goalie to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.
The second half was
mainly dictated by a lot of solid soccer from the Bison. Good defending and ball control limited UND’s
chances. UND also decreased their chances
of victory when their talented but hot-headed forward received a red card for
swearing at the ref. The Bison’s third
and final goal came from Chapman, who hit a solid far post shot from left to
right, racking up his second of the game and the season. The 3–1 win was a satisfying start for the
Bison, who started 1-0-0 while UND dropped to 0-1-0.
