NDSU vs. Iowa State University – October 30, 2005
On a dreary, rainy morning in Mankato,
the Bison fell in frustrating fashion to Iowa State
in overtime by a score of 5-2. The game
was pretty evenly played with both teams having their share of
opportunities. The Bison got on the
board first with a defensive mistake by the Cyclones. Bob Smith sent a pass to Dan Salyards who
made an excellent cross into the box. An
Iowa State defender made a diving play to try
to clear the ball, but the ball went into the back of his own net to give NDSU
the lead. NDSU held onto this lead for
about ten minutes when a Cyclone forward received a through ball. He appeared to be offside, but it was not
called and he easily put the ball away to tie the game. Iowa
State’s celebration ended almost
immediately when Nate Shubert tapped the ensuing kickoff to Brad Bateman, who
proceeded to take a shot that squeezed between the outstretched hands of the Iowa State
keeper and the crossbar. The Bison took
the 2-1 lead into halftime. There was no
scoring until about 20 minutes into the second half. A Cyclone midfielder made a cross that found
a waiting forward and headed it in to tie the score at 2. With no further scoring in regulation, the game
moved to two 10 minute overtime periods without sudden death. With sloppy play, poor passing and worse
goalkeeping, NDSU conceded 3 goals in overtime to lose 5-2. The loss dropped NDSU’s record to 7-9-2 on
the season.
