NDSU vs. South Dakota State
– October 9, 2004
The Bison were unable to keep
their streak of strong play going against a tough South Dakota State
University team, and
ended up getting trounced by the conference leaders 4-1. NDSU was missing some key players to start
the game, and SDSU was quick to exploit the Bison’s weaknesses. The Jackrabbits controlled much of the play
in the first half using their speedy central midfielders, and scored twice to
take a 2-0 halftime lead. The Bison didn’t
quit, and came out much stronger in the second half, but the SDSU defense was
able to shut down any opportunities for the Bison early in the half. SDSU capitalized on a lack of communication
by the Bison defense and midfield (a common mistake NDSU made in the game) to
take a 3-0 lead about halfway into the second period. NDSU was able to get on the board when Brad
Bateman ripped his third goal of the year past the SDSU keeper, but that was as
close as the Bison would get. Bison goalkeeper
Ian Costello had an excellent game, but the SDSU attack proved to be too much
to overcome. The loss left NDSU in third
place in the Great Plains Soccer Conference, and SDSU solidified their first
place ranking, remaining undefeated on the season.
