NDSU vs. NSU – September 26, 2004
The Bison finished off the second
half of their longest road trip of the season with a solid 5-1 victory over the
Northern State Wolves in Aberdeen,
SD. Although the game was full of questionable calls
going against each team, NDSU was able to put away their third straight
conference win in convincing fashion.
The Bison started with a wind advantage and were able to create many
opportunities right away in the first half, which included nine first half
corner kicks. However, NDSU didn’t get
on the scoreboard until Selam Ahmed was taken down in the penalty box,
resulting in a penalty kick goal for Nathan Shubert. The Bison were able to strike again right
before half when Andrew Gustafson sent a high pass towards the goal that Pat
Beaver headed over to a wide open Taylor Zimmerman. Zimmerman put the shot away for his first
collegiate goal to give NDSU a 2-0 halftime lead. Northern
State started the second
half very energized, and scored a quick goal to pull the Wolves within a
goal. About five minutes after the NSU
goal, the Bison recaptured control of the game with Selam Ahmed’s third goal of
the season, assisted by Josh Staley. The
Bison finished off the game with some excellent passing, as well as two more
goals by Nathan Shubert, giving him a hat trick on the day and five goals for
the weekend. Gustafson and Nate Chandler
assisted the final two goals for Shubert.
The win upped NDSU’s overall record to 3-2 and 3-1 in the Great Plains
Soccer Conference. Northern State now
has a 1-2-2 record in the GPSC.
