NDSU vs. SDSMT – September 25,
2004
The Bison started their longest
trek of the season with a game in Rapid
City, SD against the
Hardrockers of South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The Bison certainly did not play their best soccer
of the season, but they were able to get a 2-0 victory to reward the beginning
of their long weekend trip. The game
began rather sloppily for both teams, with neither team able to create many
scoring chances due to below average passing.
However, the Bison settled down a bit and began to control play with
runs up the sides of the field. NDSU
struck first as Cory Mullen sent the ball up to Nathan Shubert, who was able to
sneak the ball past the SDSMT keeper for a 1-0 lead, which was the halftime score. SDSMT put some pressure on in the second half
with a few quick long balls up the field, but Bison goalkeeper Andy Tierney and
the NDSU defense of Bob Smith, Andrew Gustafson, Josh Sanderson, and Brad
Bateman proved up to the task to keep the Hardrockers off the scoreboard. With time running down, Bateman placed a
great pass to Shubert for Nathan’s second goal of the game, ensuring the
victory for NDSU. The win moved the Bison’s
overall record to 2-2 and GPSC record to 2-1 on the year, while dropping
SDSMT’s record to 1-3.
