NDSU vs. Mayville State
– September 17, 2004
The Bison took action for an
exhibition match against Mayville State University
in Fargo,
enduring a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Comets. The game started with Mayville State
controlling much of the play by possessing the ball and controlling
passes. NDSU starting taking more
control of the game about 15 minutes in, and was rewarded with a penalty kick
25 minutes into the game. Eric Thompson
put the kick away to give the Bison a 1-0 lead at halftime. Bison goalkeeper Andy Tierney shut out the
Comets in the first half. NDSU started
the first half much better than they started the game, and scored quickly when
Taylor Zimmerman sent a pass through to Pat Beaver who scored his second goal
of the season for a 2-0 lead. However, Mayville State quickly charged back and scored
twice due to defensive lapses by the Bison.
The play went back and forth until around the 80th minute,
when Scott Forester, the second half goalkeeper for the Bison, misplayed a shot
and let the ball past him for a 3-2 Comet lead.
NDSU couldn’t get the equalizer and Mayville State
came away with a come from behind victory.
The loss does not count for the Bison’s conference standings (currently
1-1), but dropped their overall record to 1-2.
