NDSU vs. UND – October 23, 2004
The Bison extended their winning
streak to five consecutive games by thrashing the University of North Dakota
Fighting Sioux for the second time this
season. NDSU cruised to a 6-1 victory on
a windy October Saturday in Grand
Forks. For the
first 15 minutes of the game, NDSU had a tough time mounting any semblance of
an attack against UND. Poor passing and bad
first touches on the ball attributed to the 0-0 score line. The Bison finally started putting some passes
together and getting some shots on the net about halfway through the first
period. In the 27th minute, the “Nathan
Shubert Show” began. Nate Chandler sent
a through pass to Shubert, who put the ball past the UND keeper for the game’s
first goal. This seemed to get the Bison
going, and the rest of the game was thoroughly dominated by NDSU. However, thanks to a questionable call by the
referee, UND was rewarded a penalty kick late in the first half. Bison goalkeeper Andy Tierney came up huge
with a diving save to his left, preserving the 1-0 lead. With 3 minutes remaining in the first half,
Shubert struck again off a nice pass from Pat Beaver. The first half ended with the Bison up 2-0,
but Shubert was far from done for the day.
Just three minutes into the second half, Beaver connected with Shubert
again for his third goal of the game.
The Bison continued to dominate, and Shubert scored yet again in the
67th minute. Josh Staley was credited
with setting up the goal this time. In
the 75th minute, UND was finally able to mount a quick attack and put a nice
shot past Tierney to get on the scoreboard.
The Bison again suffered a temporary defensive breakdown, and were not
able to get their second shutout of the season.
NDSU struck again when Jesse Masloski was taken down in the UND penalty
area and was awarded a penalty kick.
Masloski put the penalty kick away for his first goal of the year. With 6 minutes remaining in the game, Shubert
concluded his impressive game by receiving a pass from Kellen Nesvig and
sneaking the ball past the UND keeper for his fifth goal of the game and 19th
goal of the season. The victory improved
NDSU’s conference record to 10-2 (11-4 overall), while dropping UND’s record to
5-4-2.
